THE MISTRESS PALAVER: EPISODE 3.
Love blinds. Jealousy makes you vulnerable and insecure. Communication cements relationship. Intelligence breeds love. Marriage is mutually exclusive to third parties. We all make vows to our partners to cherish and hold them till death. Sometimes, it becomes the question of the soul is willing but the body is weak. Love many times did not come by reasoning but the chemistry of our bodies. When the body is on fire it was hard to put it off. This makes juveniles claim, “Mum do not worry, I can take care of myself” When they go wayward. When a man is in love, he sees things differently.
It was a very colourful marriage. Dave’s marriage to Sue was a very grand one. Dave counted on her mother’s philosophy, “Marry a woman who really loves you but not someone you really love because you would suffer heartache if she did things you did not approve of.” He was sure he was in love with Sue, but how was he to know if she loved more? Dave’s mother also maintained that, “Women do despised their husbands if it happened that they are richer or more educated them.” This spurred Dave on to higher heights. Dave took a second degree and secured a UN appointment. He was posted to Warsaw for his United Nations duty station. Sue was so proud of her man. That was all a woman needs. She did everything to please him.
Of late, Dave came home late every evening. Dave could not resist the beauty of Rebecca. The knowledge that she was the Polish Beauty Queen of 2003 made him fall head over heels in love with her. When he demanded that they should have separate bank accounts, Sue did smell the rat. She, in fact, did not need money badly as her father would have supported her to the tune of any amount, if she mentioned it. These nights Dave said many unintelligible things in his sleep but the name Rebecca came out clear. Rebecca happened to be one of the few friends they made when they arrived in the Polish capital. The first is a happenstance, the second is a co-incidence and the third is enemy action but the forth is treat to life. Sue did not know how to confront Dave. She told her mother about it. “It could be dreams,” she suggested. “How could you have the same dream every night if you are not up to some love war of roses?” Sue cut in. Her mother had wanted to discuss the issue with her father but the dream source could not be relied on so she let sleeping dogs.
This morning, Dave left his mobile phone behind when he went to work. Few calls came through. Well mannered Sue decided not to answer the calls. When the calls ceased she took the slim thing, checked the voice mails and the text messages. She had the shock of her life. She quickly copied the messages on to her laptop and the voice messages he downloaded on to a CD. She labelled it R’n’B. In the evening, Dave’s uncle and some cousins came to visit. Food was served. After dinner the parties moved to the sitting room. Dave took excuse to get some drinks and snacks for the party. In his absence, Sue put the CD in to the Music Centre. She turned on the volume. After some scratching sound Rebecca’s voice came on loud and clear, “Dave why did you lie to me, you promised bringing the cash but you did not come and the bank charged me. Would I see you tonight?” The machine clicked and another message came on, “You made me shun Tony, now you treated me like shit.” Krrrrr! “If you do not love me why are you not bold enough to say it?” Uncle Ravescroft demanded the equipment be put off. The family waited for Dave to return.
When Dave entered he sensed the utter silence and was astonished to see Sue crying. He could not question the situation. He took the shopping to the kitchen. Uncle Ravescroft got up and moved towards the Music Centre and turned it on. From the kitchen Dave heard Rebecca’s voice came on loud and clear from the Music Centre. “Dave why did you lie to me, you promised bringing the cash but you did not come and the banked charged me. Would I see you tonight?” Dave appeared from the kitchen, his face was white. He charged and attacked Sue savagely. He could not be controlled. Uncle Ravescroft said few apologies to Sue. It was agreed Sue fly back to London while the case was investigated.
